How to Get Black Marks Off a Cast Iron Sink

Cast iron sinks are a tough and durable choice in the kitchen or bathroom, and if properly cleaned and maintained, cast iron lasts for many years. Cast iron resists stains, but black marks can appear if you leave dishes or food, such as tea bags or coffee, in the sink. Cast iron will scratch if you try to clean it with an abrasive cleaner or steel wool. To remove stains, it is safest to use baking soda or a cleaner designed for use on cast iron.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all dishes and food scraps from the sink, especially dark-colored objects that could cause stains.

    • 2

Turn on the sink. Spray the bowl of the cast iron sink with warm water. Coat the sink with baking soda while the cast iron is wet.

    • 3

Scrub the sink with a nonabrasive sponge. If black marks do not disappear, add another layer of baking soda. Rinse the sink with clean water when the marks disappear.

    • 4

Apply a commercial cast iron cleaner if baking soda does not remove the marks. These cleaners contain chemicals that are safe for cast iron and designed to remove stains.
