How to Get Rid of Hard Deodorant Under a Shirt Sleeve

When your shirt rubs against your skin, your deodorant oftentimes will stick to the fabric. If you have to apply deodorant again later in the day, the antiperspirant builds up under the shirt sleeve. After the deodorant dries, it remains hard and crusty. Ignoring a deodorant stain can make it difficult to remove later, especially if you wash and dry the shirt without treating the stain first. Remove the hard deodorant stain as soon as possible to prevent it from becoming a permanent addition to your shirt.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape the hard deodorant off the shirt with a dull kitchen knife.

    • 2

Soak the shirt in cold water. Rub the stain with your fingers to remove as much of the deodorant as possible.

    • 3

Dilute 1/2 cup of ammonia with 4 cups of warm water. Blot the ammonia mixture over the deodorant stain.

    • 4

Launder the shirt using the hottest water setting possible. Remove the shirt and let it air dry. Inspect the shirt carefully to see if the deodorant stain remains.

    • 5

Soak the shirt in 1 quart of warm water, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent and 1 tablespoon of ammonia if the stain remains. Let the shirt soak for 15 minutes. Rub the stain to loosen it from the fabric. Soak the shirt for another 15 minutes.

    • 6

Apply a pretreatment enzyme product to the stain. Let the shirt soak for 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the severity of the stain. Read the directions on the product carefully.

    • 7

Wash the shirt in the hottest water the fabric can withstand. Hang the shirt to air dry. Repeat the stain removal steps if any deodorant remains.
