How to Get Marker Off the Wall That Has Latex Paint

If your child made his art debut on a wall that is painted with latex paint, don’t panic. It may come off without having to bust out the old paint can to repaint or choose a whole new color for the wall. Try a few tricks known to remove marker stains. Test them first, though, in an unnoticeable spot -- such as in a closet or behind the sofa -- since there is a chance you may alter the finish or color of the latex paint during the cleaning process.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the paint down with a damp rag or sponge. If the marker is water-based and not permanent, this may be all that is necessary to get the marker off a painted wall.

    • 2

Wash the painted wall with soapy water made with approximately one quart of water and 1 tsp. of dish detergent. This may remove washable marker off of a painted wall.

    • 3

Dab a dollop of mildly abrasive bathroom cleaner on a rag, and rub the marker stains in circular motions to remove them. Rinse the wall with a wet rag when finished.

    • 4

Dampen a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, and wipe the marker off of the wall.

    • 5

Wet a special cleaning eraser, and rub it gently on the wall to remove the marker. Do not press too hard or you’re more likely to damage the wall color.

    • 6

Moisten a cotton ball with acetone or fingernail polish remover, and rub the marker stains off of the painted wall.
