How to Get Food Grease Out of My Couch

Whether you touched your couch with greasy fingers or actually dropped greasy food, grease stains are unmistakably unattractive. Food grease also soaks into the couch upholstery and becomes implanted in the fabric or leather. The longer grease remains in the fabric or leather upholstery, the more insoluble the greasy stain becomes. The couch has a better possibility of returning to its original condition when the stains are treated immediately.

Instructions

  1. Fabric Upholstery

    • 1

Coat the greasy upholstery with baking soda. Allow the powdery substance to absorb the greasy residue for 15 minutes.

    • 2

Vacuum the stained upholstery with a vacuum attachment. Extract all the greasy baking soda from the couch.

    • 3

Apply 1/2 tablespoon of dry cleaning solvent to a white rag. Blot the lingering grease stain until the couch upholstery absorbs the solvent.

    • 4

Examine the couch for remaining grease. If the upholstery still contains a greasy residue, prepare a detergent solution in a container. Combine 2 drops of dish detergent with 1 quart of warm water.

    • 5

Moisten a sponge with the solution. Dab the couch upholstery with the sponge until the remaining greasy residue dissolves.

    • 6

Dampen another rag with water. Blot the soapy upholstery to rinse out the detergent.

    • 7

Combine 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of white vinegar in another container.

    • 8

Moisten another rag in the vinegar solution. Blot the couch upholstery to ensure all the detergent is fully rinsed out. Vinegar removes detergent residue that water cannot.

    • 9

Blot the vinegar-dampened upholstery with a towel. Remove all the moisture.

    Leather Upholstery

    • 10

Blot excess grease off the leather upholstery using white paper towels. Absorb as much grease as possible.

    • 11

Squirt 1 tablespoon of mild facial cleanser into a bowl. Mix in 1 tablespoon of distilled water.

    • 12

Dampen a white rag in the cleansing solution. Tamp the leather upholstery until the remaining grease spot is fully removed.

    • 13

Moisten another rag with distilled water. Blot the previously grease-stained leather to rinse away the cleanser solution.

    • 14

Blot the water off the leather using a towel.
