Getting Super Glue Off of the Floor

A staple of model builders everywhere, Super Glue bonds materials together more tightly than wood glue or school glue. It’s superior bonding ability, however, has a downside if it bonds with materials it shouldn’t – like your floor. If a dropped tube of Super Glue leaves you with glue-covered flooring, take action immediately. Fresh stains always come up easier than stains that have already set. Regardless of whether you have Super Glue stuck to your hard-surface flooring or carpeting, you have cleaning options at your disposal.

Instructions

  1. Hard Flooring

    • 1

Run a washcloth under warm water. Add a few drops of dish soap. Work the dish soap and water into a lather. Scrub the Super Glue. This method is most effective with recent spills.

    • 2

Dip the end of a cotton swab in acetone-based nail polish remover. Dab the cotton swab over the Super Glue. This loosens the glue’s bond to your flooring, making it easier to remove.

    • 3

Pour a capful of acetone-based nail polish remover on the Super Glue. Let the glue soak in the liquid for five minutes. Wipe up the nail polish remover and as much Super Glue as possible with a paper towel.

    • 4

Scrape off the remaining bits of glue with the serrated edge of a butter knife.

    Carpeting

    • 5

Dab a small amount of lacquer thinner onto a clean washcloth. Dab at the Super Glue stain. Apply more lacquer thinner to the washcloth as needed. Scrape away loosened, soft bits of Super Glue with a putty knife.

    • 6

Pour dry cleaning solvent into a clean sponge. Scrub the remaining glue stain with the dry cleaning solvent.

    • 7

Spray your carpeting with all-purpose spot remover or carpet cleaner. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to remove any remaining Super Glue from the carpet.

    • 8

Cut away the upper layer of carpeting that contains the stain with a pair of scissors. Discard the stained carpet. Cut a replacement strip of carpet in an obscure area, such as the back of a closet. Glue the new carpeting in place.
