How to Get Rid of Mascara Stains on a Pillowcase

Mascara can look great on your face but not nearly as good on a pillowcase. Using incorrect methods or materials to remove mascara may result in a bigger stain and, possibly, an unusable pillowcase. If you use the proper procedure, however, along with liquids and materials available from most grocery stores and drugstores, you can return your pillowcase to its former stain-free condition.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloths
  • Dry-cleaning solvent
  • Mineral oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Medicine dropper
  • Ammonia
  • Chlorine bleach

Instructions

    • 1

Take your pillowcase off the pillow and place a clean cloth under the stain. This absorbs any excess liquid and prevents further staining of the pillowcase.

    • 2

Lightly dampen a cloth with dry-cleaning solvent. Dab the mascara stain firmly with this cloth.

    • 3

Dampen a clean cloth with mineral oil. Moisten the mascara stain slightly with this cloth.

    • 4

Mix together in a plastic bowl one part coconut oil and eight parts dry-cleaning solvent to form a dry spotter. Wet a clean cloth with this dry spotter and press it onto the stain. Lift the cloth off and press a dry cloth onto the stain to absorb the liquid.

    • 5

Wet a clean cloth with dry-cleaning solvent and dampen the stain with it before absorbing the moisture with a clean dry cloth. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until you are no longer removing the stain.

    • 6

Mix together in a plastic bowl 1 teaspoon of mild liquid dish soap and 1 cup of water. Apply six drops of this solution to the remaining mascara stain along with three drops of ammonia. Wipe these liquids into the stain with a clean cloth. Continue applying these two liquids and wiping until you are no longer removing any stain.

    • 7

Mix together 1 teaspoon of bleach with 1 tablespoon of water in a plastic bowl. Mix together in another bowl 1 cup of water and half a cup of white vinegar.

    • 8

Apply the bleach solution over the remaining stain with a medicine dropper. After thirty seconds rinse this away under the tap with clean water then rinse further with the vinegar solution before rinsing with water once more. Hang the pillowcase outside on a line and allow it to dry.
