How to Get Gas Out of Upholstery

Sitting on fabric upholstery while wearing clothing soaked or stained with gasoline may result in gasoline stains on the furniture. Gasoline rapidly permeates upholstery, creating a pale brown or pink stain on the fabric. Although gasoline quickly evaporates, it leaves a mixture of flammable chemicals in upholstery, which is extremely hazardous. Since the lubricants and crude oil in gasoline become more insoluble over time, get gasoline out of upholstery immediately. The quicker you remove gasoline stains, the better possibility upholstery has of recovering.

Instructions

    • 1

Coat the gasoline-stained upholstery with cornstarch. Let the cornstarch absorb the gasoline for 15 minutes.

    • 2

Brush the gasoline-soaked cornstarch off the fabric upholstery using a whisk broom. Leave no cornstarch on the upholstery.

    • 3

Dampen a cleaning rag with dry-cleaning solvent. Use the solvent manufacturer’s recommended amount.

    • 4

Tamp the remaining gasoline stain with the solvent-dampened rag until the gasoline is completely dissolved. Frequently fold the rag, dampening it occasionally with fresh solvent, if necessary.

    • 5

Blot the solvent-moistened upholstery with a towel. Absorb any remaining solvent from the upholstery.
