Repairing Discoloration From Tape on Stainless Steel

Stainless steel gets its name because it is resistant to rusting. The term "stainless" does not mean the metal cannot or will not get discolored or stained through other means. Tape discolors materials for several reasons. The glue in the tape itself may result in discoloration, and the stickiness of the glue typically attracts dirt, dust and other materials that blacken the area to which the tape was applied. Repairing the discoloration from tape on stainless steel requires some basic cleaning materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the stainless steel in a sink filled with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. The detergent in the dish soap helps break up the glues in tape while also removing dirt that the glue attracts. Wipe the stains with a soft sponge and rinse the steel with water to remove any detergent residue.

Spray any tape stains with white vinegar and let the vinegar sit for several minutes. The acidity in the vinegar helps break up any remaining glue or stains from the tape and won't damage the metal. Wipe the vinegar away with a soft cloth, and any remaining stains should be taken away with it.

Apply a methyl ethyl ketone-based cleaner to the metal if tape stains are still a problem. These cleaners are highly corrosive, so wear protective gloves and follow all instructions on the packaging to prevent skin exposure and inhalation. The cleaner should dissolve any remaining stains on the steel.
