How to Clean Paint Off of the Side of a Brick House

Brick is porous, so when a substance gets on the surface, it quickly soaks in. If you find paint stains on the side of your brick house, soap and water likely aren’t enough to get them off. Removing paint from brick requires more aggressive cleaning products. Clean the paint off properly to preserve the integrity of the brick during the process.

Fill a clean bucket with 1 gallon of warm water. Add 1/2 cup trosidum phosphate. Use a long stick to stir the water and TSP until the powder dissolves.

    • 2

Scrub the TSP solution onto the paint spots on the brick wall with a stiff scrub brush. Let the TSP sit on the brick for 10 minutes.

    • 3

Scrub the brick again with the scrub brush to remove the paint. Repeat this process until all of the paint is off of the brick.

    • 4

Moisten a rag with paint remover if any of the stains are still on the house. Soak the paint spots with the paint remover. Scrub with a scrub brush to remove the paint, then rinse well with water.

Scrub any remaining residue from the brick with the scrub brush and scouring powder. Moisten the scrub brush with water first, then sprinkle scouring powder onto it. Scrub the brick vigorously to remove any residue. Rinse the brick well with clean water.
