How to Get a Pen Ink Stain Out of a Cotton Bedspread

Every stain produced by pen ink is distinct and may require a different method of removal than other ink stains. Inks vary by color intensity as well as each manufacturer's formulation. Getting such stains out of cotton materials such as bedspreads requires patience, because experimentation may be required to find a method that works. But once you do, removing pen ink is a straightforward process that requires few cleaning supplies.

Instructions

  1. Alcohol Method

    • 1

Moisten a small sponge with rubbing alcohol.

    • 2

Wipe the sponge over the ink stain on the bedspread, rubbing gently but thoroughly.

    • 3

Rub liquid laundry detergent into the stain, with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Allow it to set for approximately 15 minutes.

    • 4

Launder and dry the bedspread normally.

    Glycerine Method

    • 5

Mix a solution of liquid laundry detergent and hot water, as instructed on the label for hand washing.

    • 6

Soak a clean white cloth in the hot soapy water, and then wring out the cloth.

    • 7

Pour a small amount of glycerine on the cloth while it is still warm. Then rub the ink stain vigorously.

    • 8

Set aside the stained bedspread for approximately 5 minutes, to allow the glycerine time to work on the stain.

    • 9

Repeat this section's Steps 2 to 4, if the stain remains. Continue the process until the stain is removed from the bedspread. Then launder and dry as usual.
