How to Get Watermarks Out of a Wood Log Cabin Wall

Water leaks and flood damage can lead to watermarks on log cabin walls. Not all water stains are created equal. The quality of the wood and the age and depth of the water stain will determine the cleaning method you use. However, before tackling these stains, you must identify and close the source of the leak or all your cleaning will be in vain.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the surface of the watermark with fine-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface of the wood log cabin wall.

    • 2

Mix an oxalic acid paste that is roughly 3 parts oxalic acid powder and 1 part warm water.

    • 3

Apply the oxalic acid paste to the watermark on the wall with a plastic putty knife. Every five minutes, scoop away a small portion of the paste to see if the water stain has been bleached away. If the stain is still there, leave the paste in place. Once the stain is removed, move on to the next step.

    • 4

Wipe away all the oxalic acid paste.

    • 5

Mix 2 tablespoons of borax with hot water. Moisten a sponge with the solution, wring it out and wipe to neutralize the oxalic acid and wipe away all traces of the paste.

    • 6

Moisten a clean sponge with water to wipe away all traces of the borax. Rinse the sponge frequently as you wipe.

    • 7

      Towel dry the area.
