Removing Dried Paint From Carpet With Rubbing Alcohol

Paint spills on the carpet are bad enough when the stain is still wet; but when the paint dries, you face an even more difficult cleaning problem. There are several types of paint, including water- and oil-based, and each requires a different cleaning solution. Rubbing alcohol works to remove both water- and oil-based paint, but for best results, you also need to use soap, water and turpentine on oil-based paint.

Instructions

  1. Water-Based Paint

    • 1

Use a utility knife to gently scrape the stained carpet fibers. This helps loosen and remove some of the dried paint.

    • 2

Apply rubbing alcohol to the dried paint. Wait a few seconds to let the alcohol penetrate the stain.

    • 3

Wet a paper towel with soap and water. Blot the dried paint until the stain disappears. Rinse the carpet with clean, cool water and pat it dry.

    Oil-Based Paint

    • 4

Scrape up as much dried oil-based paint as possible with a utility knife.

    • 5

Dip a paper towel into turpentine and blot the dried paint to loosen it. Turpentine usually removes most of the paint. Apply rubbing alcohol to the spot and blot it to remove the rest of the paint and turpentine.

    • 6

Moisten a paper towel with water. Blot the carpet with the damp towel to remove the turpentine and rubbing alcohol. Pat the carpet dry with another paper towel.
