Removing the Green Spots on a Silver Plate

When silver is exposed to oxygen it begins to tarnish and will eventually develop green spots. You can remove this tarnish with products that you may already have in your home. Be careful not to scrub too hard or use very coarse abrasives, as you can wear the silver or scratch it and pit it.

Instructions

  1. Boiling Method

    • 1

Line the inside of the pot with aluminum foil so that the shiny side of the foil is facing up. Use a pot that is big enough for the silver plate to sit in.

    • 2

Place the silver object into the pot along with ¼ cup washing soda.

    • 3

Add 1 gallon boiling water to the pot and let it sit for 15 minutes. The washing soda will create a chemical reaction that will pull the tarnish spots from the silver.

    • 4

Remove the silver from the water solution with a pair of tongs. Rinse it with clear water and dry it completely with a clean cloth.

    Polish Method

    • 5

Add just enough water to ½ cup baking soda to make a thick paste. The paste should be the same consistency as toothpaste.

    • 6

Rub the paste into the green spots on the silver with a clean cloth. Rub until the tarnish is completely gone.

    • 7

Rinse the silver with clear water and dry it completely with a clean cloth.
