How to Clean Unsealed Grout Between Porcelain Tiles With Soap

Grout is a cement-like material used to fill in the gaps between tiles, creating a strong foundation that protects the porcelain, ceramic or stone from chips and cracks. After the grout is applied it is generally sealed to protect it from dirt, grime or dust. When the grout is left unsealed it becomes susceptible to staining and wear, both of which make the porcelain tile floor or countertop look dingy and dirty. Clean the unsealed grout between your porcelain tiles with soap and water to restore its appearance without the need for bleach or other noxious chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a paste with 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap, 1 cup baking soda, 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1/2 cup warm water. Stir the ingredients and add more baking soda if the paste is too runny.

    • 2

Wrap your index finger with a paper towel and use it to spread the dish soap paste over the unsealed grout. Work the homemade paste into the grout with an old toothbrush. Allow the grout cleaner to remain for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 3

Rinse the paste away. Use a turkey baster and plain water to blast the grout, washing away the paste, loose dirt and grime.

    • 4

Dry the grout with a soft towel. Use your index finger to dry the grout and remove any remaining residue.
