How to Get Red Lipstick Out of a Rug

Lipstick is an essential item in your makeup case. Owning lipstick, however, adds to the risk of getting a stubborn-to-remove stain on your rug, especially if you have children. For best stain-removing results, it's important to tend to a lipstick stain as soon as possible. An untreated lipstick stain on the carpet allows the stain to set and makes it harder to remove.

Things You'll Need

  • Butter knife
  • Vacuum
  • Oil-based spot remover
  • Cloth
  • 1 tablespoon dish-washing liquid
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 cups water
  • Bowl
  • White rag

Instructions

    • 1

Position a butter knife as low as possible on the carpet fibers and scrape the lipstick off working the knife upward. Then, vacuum the debris. This removes the wet top layer of lipstick. Do not attempt to rub out the stain. This only causes the lipstick to spread.

    • 2

Apply an oil-based spot remover to the stain and blot using a cloth until the spot remover has been completely absorbed and the lipstick no longer rubs off on the cloth.

    • 3

Mix 1 tablespoon of dish-washing liquid, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 2 cups of water in a bowl.

    • 4

Blot a white rag into the solution and blot the rag onto the stain. Repeat this process until the lipstick stain is gone from the carpet.

    • 5

Fill a sponge with cold water and rinse the stain to clear the solution from the rug. Dry the rug by blotting it with a cloth until the carpet is dry.
