How to Get Lotion Marks Out of Silk

Silk fabrics are beautiful and smooth, and are often used to make very soft and wrinkle resistant sheets, skirts, blouses and dresses. Silk fibers, however, readily bleed their dyes and color if mistreated. Lotion marks can be especially difficult to remove since traditional soaks and pretreatments can cause silk to fade and lose its color. If your hand or body lotion has left marks on a silk garment or sheet, you will need professional assistance to remove the marks.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a reliable dry cleaner. If you do not have a dry cleaner you know and trust, ask neighbors, co-workers and friends to recommend a knowledgeable and detail-oriented dry cleaner.

    • 2

Bring your silk into the dry cleaner as quickly as possible after noticing lotion marks.

    • 3

Make a list of the lotion's ingredients and provide this to the dry cleaner. The more information the dry cleaner has about what caused the marks, the more success he will have removing them.

    • 4

Point out every lotion mark to the dry cleaner when you drop off the silk for cleaning. Do not leave your silk item with the dry cleaner until you have gone over every spot together.

    • 5

Pick up your silk item from the dry cleaner's once it has been cleaned. Extra charges may apply for removing lotion marks. Examine the silk for any remaining marks or areas where the fabric has lost its shine. If the cleaning process has caused the fabric to lose color or shine, ask the dry cleaner to give the item an additional restorative bath treatment.
