How to Remove Oil Spots in a Garage

Oil spots in the garage are inevitable if you use the space to park vehicles. That doesn't make it any less frustrating when you discover a greasy, hard to remove blotch on the floor. It's important to remove the oil as quickly as possible because concrete readily absorbs liquids. Making an attempt to absorb any oil that hasn't soaked in is the first priority. Once this is done, it's time to remove the oil that has penetrated the concrete, which may require more than one attempt to prove successful.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot the spot with an absorbent cloth to remove as much of the oil as possible.

    • 2

Sprinkle clumping cat litter over the spot to soak up the remaining oil. Allow the cat litter to remain in place for about half an hour.

    • 3

Sweep up the cat litter and dispose of it in the trash.

    • 4

Put on protective goggles and rubber gloves. Fill a container with 1 ounce trisodium phosphate, 1 cup clumping cat litter and 1 cup water. Use a paint stir stick to combine the ingredients until they develop the consistency of paste.

    • 5

Spread a 3/8-inch layer of the paste over the oil spot. Allow it to remain in place for 24 hours.

    • 6

Loosen the dried paste using a paint scraper. Sweep it up and dispose of it in the trash.

    • 7

Scour the area with a nylon scrub brush and wash away any remaining paste with a garden hose.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 4 through 7 until the oil spot has been completely removed.
