How to Remove Oil Base Paint From a Granite Composite Sink

A fresh coat of paint cheers up any space, but not if it lands on your granite surfaces. Oil- or alkyd-based paint has staying power that is appreciated in high-scrub areas, such as the kitchen. Unfortunately, this same durable quality makes these synthetic resin paints a bit of a challenge to remove from accidentally splattered surroundings. Remove the unsightly evidence of a painting mishap from your stone sink so you can enjoy your freshly painted room.

Instructions

    • 1

Chip small paint drops carefully off the granite surface with a razor blade. For large paint spills, apply a commercial paint stripper as directed on the label. Gently remove the paint “goo” from the granite after the caustic soda or lye-based product begins to soak through, using a plastic putty knife or wooden scraping tool, suggests the Marble Institute of America.

    • 2

Rinse the granite surface thoroughly with water and follow any other directions for clean up on the paint stripper’s label. Paint stripping products can stain and etch granite surfaces; re-polish the stone after removing any stains, if necessary.

    • 3

Remove any staining or discoloring left behind from the oil-based paint or paint stripper using a clean damp rag and a gentle household cleanser with bleach. Rinse the sink with water.

    • 4

Rub a sprinkling of marble polishing powder over the discolored surface using a damp cloth until you have eliminated the etching. Rinse the sink with water. Call a professional stone refinisher for removal of stubborn marks.
