How to Get Rust Stains Out of My Washing Machine

Rust in the washing machine is caused by several reasons, including rusty water pipes or a high iron content in the water. Whatever the reason, the reddish-brown rust spots can spread from the washing machine to your clothing. If left alone, the rust will eventually spread throughout the washing tub, causing it to degrade further and requiring a replacement. However, it is possible to remove the rust spots from your washer with some common household supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1/4 cup table salt
  • Large rag
  • Knife
  • Cloth
  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • Lint-free cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine from the outlet to avoid an electrical shock.

    • 2

Create a mixture with 1/2 cup of white vinegar, 3 tablespoons of lime juice and 1/4 cup of table salt. Stir the ingredients until they are well-incorporated.

    • 3

Dampen a large rag with the white vinegar solution, and use it to spot-clean the rust spots. The mildly abrasive table salt and the acidic lime juice remove the rust stains without causing further damage.

    • 4

Allow the mixture to remain on the washing machine for two to three hours before wiping it away with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Pour 1 cup of lemon juice into the machine’s detergent reservoir, and run it on the hottest water setting. The lemon juice flushes out the washing machine system, removing the finer rust particulates.

    • 6

Wipe out the washing machine with a lint-free cloth.
