Getting Rust Off Railroad Lanterns

Railroad lanterns are widely collected by train enthusiasts and may date to before the Civil War. The lanterns are usually constructed of tin and encase a glass globe. Because of their age and heavy use, rust is a common problem on railroad lanterns. To remove rust, start with the mildest method possible. The rust is probably hardened, though, from years of exposure to the elements, and will likely require a commercial rust remover. Consult a professional restorer before attempting to remove the rust from valuable railroad lanterns.
