How to Get a Dirty Ring Off of a Porcelain Tub

Nothing looks worse on your porcelain tub than a dirty brown ring. An accumulation of oil, dirt and soap scum collect at the water line and remain on the porcelain after the water drains out of the tub. It's not difficult to remove a dirty bathtub ring and the process is best tackled after each bath, rather than allowing the residue to build up. You can use common household supplies to get rid of porcelain bathtub ring without scratching the surface.

  • Spray bottle
  • Ammonia
  • Nylon mesh scrubber
  • Baking soda
  • Table salt

      Fill a spray bottle halfway with water. Pour ammonia into the bottle to fill it the rest of the way.

      Spray the diluted ammonia onto the dirty ring around the tub. Allow it to sit for two to three minutes to cut grease and oil stains.

      A nonabrasive sponge helps remove dirty bathtub ring.

      Wet a nylon mesh sponge with the ammonia spray. Sprinkle baking soda over the sponge.

      Scrub the porcelain surface to remove the dirty ring. Rinse the sponge frequently to remove soil. Add more ammonia and baking soda and continue to scrub.

      Table salt adds extra abrasiveness without harming the porcelain.

      Remove particularly stubborn porcelain bathtub ring stains by sprinkling salt onto the sponge, along with the baking soda. Scrub the surface to remove the remaining stains.
