How to Get Wax Out of Tights

Wax dripping on your tights is annoying, but it doesn't have to ruin your evening, or your tights. A simple trick can melt and wick away most of the wax easily. If any dye is left behind, it can be treated as well. Best of all, you don't need any fancy equipment or specialized cleaning supplies. As with most stain removal, your chances of success are better if you tackle the problem right away and don't let the wax set in.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tights. The cleaning process is not something you should attempt with them on your legs.

    • 2

Heat up the iron to the polyester setting. If you try this technique on a different fabric, such as cotton, you can set it at a higher temperature, but use a lower setting to avoid melting the tights.

    • 3

Scrape off any dried wax carefully with a butter knife.

    • 4

Lay down several pieces of newspaper on a solid surface. Put the tights down on top and stuff two or three paper towels between the layers of the tights underneath the stain.

    • 5

Tear of several more paper towels and have them ready in your non-dominant hand while you hold the iron in your dominant hand. Hold the paper towels over the stain and press the iron against it for just a second. Lift the iron up, move the paper towels so a clean section is covering the stain and press the iron against it again. Continue in this manner until all the wax is gone.

Inspect the tights for dye stains from the wax. If there are any, wash the area right away by hand with dish soap designed to cut grease. If any stain remains, mix two parts alcohol and one part water and apply the solution to the stain with a cotton ball.
