How to Get Glitter Lipstick Off Fabric

Although glittery lipstick might look marvelous on your lips, it is not so attractive on clothing. Makeup stains are often stubborn, but the right products and treatments go a long way toward freshening your fabric. Instructions

    • 1

Read the garment label. If it's a washable material, you have the best chance of removing the glitter lipstick without damaging your fabric. If you have a delicate fabric, consult your dry cleaner for care instructions. Because lipstick ingredients vary -- some contain wax and others oil -- it might help to show your dry cleaner the lip product.

Blot your glitter lipstick stain with whitening toothpaste that contains baking soda, not gel. Gently rub the stain with your fingertips. Once you saturate the stain, rinse with cold water.

    • 3

Spray hairspray on your glitter lipstick stain. Do this on a washable garment that you have not cleaned with toothpaste. Allow the spray to dry and set for approximately 2 minutes. Using a clean washcloth, wipe the area clean.

    • 4

Pretreat your stain with a commercial stain-removing product. Do this on washable fabrics such as cotton or acrylic. Do not do this if you already applied toothpaste or hairspray. Rinse with warm water, then launder as usual, following the manufacturer’s instructions on the label.

    • 5

Hang your stained garment or lay it flat to dry to avoid setting the stain. If your methods are not successful, repeat your cleaning technique once more or use a clean, white cloth to apply a dry-cleaning solvent to the stain. Blot and repeat until the glitter lipstick vanishes.

Allow your dry cleaner to tackle stains that won’t budge.
