How to Clean Brown Spots Out of an Ironstone

Ironstone is a heavy, high-quality material used for china dishware. Brown spots can form inside the glaze, and scrubbing the surface cannot clean them. Cleaning these deeply embedded stains requires strong chemical penetration, but the chemicals that professionals employ are too dangerous for the average person to use since they are harsh on the skin and highly combustible. There is a safer do-it-yourself method that yields results, but it requires repeating the process since the chemicals are mild.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a toothbrush and toothpaste to scrub out any spots. Scrub hard, rinse the china with a wet rag, and then dry it with a towel. Repeat the process to lighten the stains until they are removed. If the stains do not lighten, continue to the next step.

    • 2

Fill a plastic container with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Place the ironstone china inside the container, and completely submerge it in the hydrogen peroxide. Cover the container with the lid, and leave it undisturbed for three to four days.

    • 3

Remove the ironstone china from the container, and set it in direct sunlight so the peroxide vaporizes from the plate. Repeat this process as needed until the brown spots are gone.

    • 4

Clean the peroxide from the china in the sink using dishwashing liquid, and immediately dry it with a hand towel.
