How to Get Scuff Marks Off Granite

Granite is a durable natural stone that is mainly composed of four minerals: feldspar, mica, quartz and hornblende. The ratio of minerals in each slab determines the granite’s coloring and helps strengthen the stone’s naturally dense composition. Unfortunately, granite is not completely impervious to scuff marks that occur from rubber soles on floors or hot pots set onto countertops. It is possible to remove the granite scuff marks with safe, inexpensive products.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 tablespoon pH neutral dish soap or cleanser

Instructions

    • 1

Create a mixture of one-half tablespoon pH-neutral liquid dish soap or cleanser concentrate and 4 cups warm water. Stir the ingredients until the water begins to suds. Check the cleanser’s label to ensure it is pH-neutral.

    • 2

Dampen a microfiber cloth with the mixture and work it into the scuff marks, applying slight pressure if necessary to remove the stains. Wipe away the cleansing solution with a damp cloth. If the scuff mark persists, move onto the next step.

    • 3

Dampen a piece of #0000 steel wool with plain water. Gently rub the scuff mark with the steel wool until it is completely gone.

    • 4

Rinse the granite with plain water and dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent streaks.
