How to Clean Rust on Copper

The rust-like patina or corrosion that develops naturally on some metals might not be as appreciated on a copper bracelet as it is on an impressive copper “cowbell roof” over a doorway. Although some people find the tarnished hue of Mother Nature’s oxidation process attractive, for those who prefer sparkling clean copper, there is a solution, and this simple solution might be as close as your pantry or kitchen cupboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash or wipe down the copper item with a gentle household cleanser, such as dish soap and warm water.

    • 2

Sprinkle the copper with salt. Soak a rag with vinegar, and gently rub the salt into the metal object. Add more salt and vinegar as needed, until you have removed all of the tarnish.

    • 3

Fill a sink or bucket with hot, soapy water, and thoroughly wash or scrub the metal with a clean rag. Rinse the copper item with water.

    • 4

Dry the metal completely to avoid further oxidation.
