How to Clean Soot Off a Plaster Wall

Soot stains from fire or the fireplace leave a greasy, dusty film on nearby surfaces. Plaster walls are susceptible to soot stains but must be cleaned carefully to avoid damaging the plaster. To clean soot stains off your plaster walls you must use supplies that cut through the grease while removing the stains. When you combine the right supplies with careful cleaning techniques, you can achieve clean plaster walls again.

  • Vacuum
  • Bucket
  • 1 cup ammonia
  • Cellulose sponge
  • Clean cloths

      Vacuum the plaster walls using an upholstery attachment to remove as much loose soot as possible.

      Pour 1 gallon of hot water into a bucket. Add 1 cup of ammonia.

      Saturate a cellulose sponge with the diluted ammonia solution. Squeeze the sponge to get rid of excess moisture.

      Wipe or gently scrub the plaster walls to remove the soot stains. Rinse the sponge with water as needed. Apply more ammonia solution and continue to lightly scrub. When the cleaning solution becomes discolored from the soot, make a new batch and continue cleaning.

      Pat dry the plaster walls to remove excess moisture. Allow the walls to air dry completely.
