How to Clean Yellowed Vinyl Shutters

Shutters have traditionally been made of wood, but many people opt for vinyl shutters instead. Unlike wood, vinyl shutters will not crack, warp or peel and require less maintenance. They are also typically much less expensive than wooden versions. However, if you select white or beige vinyl shutters, they can become yellowed over time. This is a result of sun exposure and buildup of dirt or grime. Clean your vinyl shutters to prevent the yellowing and to remove any yellowing that has already occurred.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with warm water.

    • 2

Add dish detergent to the bucket until you have created suds.

    • 3

Dip a clean cloth inside the bucket of water and detergent. Gently scrub the vinyl shutters. Work in one area at a time, removing any dirt, spiderwebs or other grime that is clinging to the shutters.

    • 4

Scrub the shutters gently so that you do not damage them. Do not scrub them too roughly. If the yellowing is not removed, contact the shutters' manufacturer. Some types of vinyl shutters may be able to withstand chemical cleaners, but you should always make sure before using them as such cleaners can damage the shutters.
