Getting Permanent Marker Out of a Sofa

Permanent markers are infused with fade-resistant pigments, which provide long-lasting color on surfaces. While permanent markers add a creative touch to many surfaces, the ink can permanently stain sofa upholstery. You must address permanent marker stains immediately, to ensure the stain will lift from your sofa. The longer permanent marker ink sits on the sofa, the harder the stain becomes to remove.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten the permanent ink stain with nontoxic ink stain removal cream. Use just enough cream to cover the stain.

    • 2

Work the stain removal cream into the stain with a clean toothbrush. Scrub the stain with the toothbrush gently to avoid damaging the sofa's upholstery. Work from the edges of the stain toward the center, so you do not spread the stain.

    • 3

Continue scrubbing the stain removal cream into the stain until the ink dissolves. Apply more stain removal cream, if necessary.

    • 4

Fill a spray bottle with clean water. Spray the area lightly.

    • 5

Blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Continue spraying and blotting until all the stain removal cream is rinsed out.

    • 6

Blot up as much moisture as possible with a clean towel. Allow the upholstery to air-dry the rest of the way.
