How to Get Oil Dye Off of a Countertop

Oil dye is commonly used in automobile oil and products used to do crafts such as coloring Easter eggs. Because oil can saturate deep into porous surfaces, oil dye can leave a stain on the countertop. Removing the oil dye stain is a simple process for most countertops, but some stone countertops require additional work and time to remove the stain.

Instructions

  1. Light-Colored, Non-Stone Countertops

    • 1

Remove any items from the area of stain on the countertop. Put a drop of dish detergent on the stained area. Use a damp sponge to distribute the dish detergent on the stained area. Dish detergent breaks up and removes greasy substances, and will remove any remaining oil on the countertop. Clean the soap off the area with a damp, warm rag.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of household bleach on the stain. Allow the bleach to penetrate a few minutes until the stain disappears.

    • 3

Dampen a cotton rag with warm water. Clean the countertop with the dampened rag until the bleach is removed.

    Stone Countertops

    • 4

Combine 1 cup of bleached flour and 2 tablespoons of dish detergent in small bowl. Mix the combination, adding water until it becomes a paste texture.

    • 5

Use a standard kitchen spatula to apply the paste on the stain. The past should be about ½-inch thick.

    • 6

Cover the entire stain with a piece of plastic wrap. Tape the corners of the plastic wrap to the countertop and create a seal. The paste should set on the countertop for at least 24 hours to penetrate and remove the stain.

    • 7

Remove the plastic wrap and tape after 24 hours. Dampen a cotton rag with warm water and remove the paste. Repeat the process if the stain is not removed completely.
