How to Get Window Caulking Off Clothes

Window caulk is a compound that creates a pliable seal that fills gaps, cracks and crevices in window frames. Method of application depends on the type of window caulk and the manufacturer’s specifications. While some caulks require application with a caulking gun, others come in self-pressurized containers, squeeze tubes and aerosol cans that eliminate the need for application devices. Regardless of how it’s applied, window caulk is messy. If it gets on your clothes, a softening agent can help.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the clothing on a flat surface, stained-side-up. Coat the caulk with a layer of petroleum jelly using the tip of your finger.

    • 2

Allow the petroleum jelly to remain on the caulk for three to five days. The longer the petroleum jelly remains on the caulk, the softer the caulk will get.

    • 3

Heat the petroleum jelly-covered caulk with warm air from a hairdryer after the waiting period. Wave the hairdryer back and forth to avoid burning the fabric. One to two minutes of heat should be all that is necessary.

    • 4

Lift the edges of the caulk using your fingernail or the edge of a razor blade once soft. Peel the caulk from the clothing using your fingertips.

    • 5

Discard the caulk and wash the clothing as usual to remove any caulk residue.
