How to Get Rid of Waterspots on Silk Blouses

A new silk blouse and a single drop of rain are a recipe for disaster. Water spots are not stains like wine or dirt. Water spots do not harm the fabric and are not permanent discolorations. They do not require harsh detergents or stain removers. Though many silk items are hand washable, individual drops of water onto a silk blouse leave behind a discoloration that does not fade as the water evaporates. Oddly enough, a little more water and a little heat will remove a water spot.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the label on the silk blouse. If it says “dry clean only,” skip Step 4. All other steps are safe.

    • 2

Lay a white towel over your ironing board. Warm your iron on the silk setting. Do not turn on the steam setting. To prevent accidental water spots, the iron should not have any water in it.

    • 3

Turn the blouse inside out and arrange the blouse on the ironing board with the spot over the towel.

    • 4

Blot the back of the water spot with a clean, white cloth soaked in water.

    • 5

Move the iron over the wet area until dry. Do not press and hold the iron or you will scorch the material.

    • 6

Turn the blouse right side out and examine the water spot. If any signs of the spot remain, rub the spot in the direction of the weave with a clean, white cloth. A silk cloth is preferred, but any white cloth will work.
