How to Remove Laminate Glue From Stainless Steel

The term “stainless steel” is misleading. Your stainless steel sink and fixtures are not actually stain-proof. But they are less susceptible to corrosion and tarnishing than steel that does not contain 10.5 percent chromium, the threshold for stainless classification. Stainless resists food and chemical stains, but glue and the residue it leaves behind will stick to stainless steel, posing a challenge for the homeowner. Laminate glue is a particularly strong adhesive that's used to glue laminate flooring into place. If you inadvertently stain your stainless steel sink with laminate glue while laying down new flooring or a new countertop, you can use common household chemicals to remove the glue and restore your stainless steel sink's brilliant shine.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the sink. Run hot water into the sink until it covers the glue. Let the water sit for five to 10 minutes. Drain the sink. If the glue is stuck to a stainless steel countertop or appliance rather than a sink, soak a washcloth in hot water and lay it over the glue. Rinse out and reapply the hot washcloth as it cools. Continue this process for five to 10 minutes. Heat will soften relatively fresh glue stains.

Scrape away as much of the laminate glue as possible with a plastic knife or spoon.

    • 3

Pour acetone over the glue. Let the acetone sit for five minutes. Acetone softens the laminate glue while also breaking the bond between the glue and the stainless steel. Scrape away any remaining glue with a plastic spoon.

    • 4

Pour rubbing alcohol onto a clean cloth. Rub any laminate glue residue that remains with the alcohol-saturated cloth until the glue residue is completely gone.
