How to Get Gravy Out of the Carpet

Gravy complements a variety of dishes but not your carpeting. The thick, oil-based sauce causes a two-part stain. To remove the gravy stain completely from your carpet, you must address both the color and oil portions of the stain. With the use of common household supplies and careful stain removal techniques, you can get gravy out of your carpet to avoid an oily, discolored stain that attracts other dirt and debris.

Instructions

    • 1

Scoop gravy off the carpet with a spoon. Dispose of it in a trash bag.

    • 2
Powder absorbs oils so you can concentrate on removing the gravy color.

Cover the remaining gravy stain with talcum powder. Leave the powder on the carpet for 10 to 20 minutes to absorb oil and moisture. Vacuum the carpet to remove the talcum powder.

    • 3

Moisten a sponge with rubbing alcohol. Squeeze out excess moisture. Dab at the gravy stain to remove oil and color.

    • 4

Pour 2 cups of warm water into a bucket. Add 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent, followed by 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.

    • 5

Treat any remaining gravy stain with the vinegar and detergent solution. Dampen a clean cloth with the mixture and sponge the carpet to remove the gravy stain. As the stain is lifted, rinse the cloth with water. Add more detergent solution and continue to sponge the stain.

    • 6

Wet another cloth with water. Wring out excess moisture. Blot the carpet to remove the detergent solution.

    • 7
Blot the carpet, rather than scrub, to maintain carpet fibers.

Aid the drying process by pressing dry cloths into the carpet fibers to absorb moisture. Let the carpeting air-dry completely.
