How to Remove Adhesive Residue From Tinted Windows

Once you have removed the thin plastic tint from your windows, you must remove the adhesive left behind. Newer adhesives leave less residue than their older counterparts, but there is still a small amount left on the window. Scraping alone does not remove the adhesive, so you must use a solvent to break the glue's bond with your window. Older window tint may be more stubborn than newer adhesive, so you may need to repeat the process several times.

Instructions

    • 1

Ventilate the area well and put on a face mask and goggles to protect your eyes. Ammonia can be caustic and breathing the fumes can be dangerous.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of undiluted ammonia into a spray bottle to make application easier.

    • 3

Spray ammonia directly onto the adhesive. Allow the ammonia to work for a few seconds before scrubbing.

    • 4

Scrub the adhesive with fine-grain steel wool. Be careful not to press too hard, but scrub quickly while the ammonia is still wet.

    • 5

Wipe away the adhesive residue and ammonia with a paper towel and assess the window. If any adhesive residue is still attached to the window, repeat the ammonia and scrubbing until it is removed.
