How to Get Spray Paint to Come Off a Table

Solvent Method

  Read the label of the spray paint can to determine what base it has, if you have the can. Choose the solvent based on the paint base: water on water-based paint, rubbing alcohol on latex paint, acetone on oil bases.

  Look at the table closely to see what concerns there are about the finish. Wood may be raw, stained or varnished. Plastic and glass are more resistant to solvents with less concerns.

  Apply the appropriate solvent to the rag and wipe the paint off if there are no concerns about the underlying finish of the table. If you are concerned about the finish, use the scraping method to remove the paint.

  Apply mineral oil to a rag and wipe down a table section with paint where you have concerns about the underlying finish, such as wood. The mineral oil lubricates the wood and helps protect any finish.

  Set a rag over the paint stain.

  Scrape the paint off with the scraper. Be careful not to place too much pressure where you will scratch or damage the table finish. Use a fingernail if you have major concerns.
