How to Get Jean Dye Off a Shiny Coated Canvas Purse

After wearing your new dark-wash jeans with the brand-new, designer-label, shiny canvas purse you saved three months to afford, you notice dark blue smudges on the canvas. Unfortunately, the process that creates dark-wash jeans allows the dye to leach from the fabric for seven to 11 washes. As long as you remove the dye transfer promptly, you will be able to restore the purse to its original condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove everything from your purse. Though the process should draw out the dye, you do not want to risk staining or ruining anything inside your bag.

    • 2

Stuff a white towel inside the purse to help it hold its shape and soak up any moisture that seeps inside the bag.

    • 3

Mix 1/3 cup water and 1/3 cup ammonia in a spray bottle.

    • 4

Spray a small amount of the mixture on an inconspicuous portion of the purse, like the bottom and allow it to set for one minute then wipe it off with a wet white cloth. If the colors do not run, the canvas is colorfast and the mixture is safe to use on the purse.

    • 5

Spray the dye transfer with the water and ammonia. Wet but do not soak the canvas. Allow it to set for two to three minutes.

    • 6

Wet a white washcloth and wring it out. Add a drop of baby shampoo to the cloth and rub to create a lather.

    • 7

Blot the canvas with the cloth to draw out the dye and neutralize the ammonia.

    • 8

Wet another white washcloth and wring it out. Blot the cleaned area to remove all soap and ammonia. Rinse the cloth as necessary, until all traces of the dye are removed.

    • 9

Replace the towel inside the purse with a fresh, dry towel and allow the purse to air-dry naturally.
