How to Get Lamp Oil out of a Cotton Fabric

A lamp oil stain on a favorite article or clothing or household item can be cause for alarm. However, lamp oil stains are removable using common products and a few simple steps. The key to fighting a stain is to treat it as soon as possible before it sets, meaning it becomes permanently ingrained in the fabric. Once the stain is treated, wash the soiled article alone to avoid transferring the oil to other garments. Before drying, check the article to ensure the stain is fully removed.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot up as much oil as possible with a paper towel.

    • 2

Place a few drops of heavy-duty liquid detergent on the soiled area. Dab the detergent into the stain. Do not rub the fabric because this can spread the stain. Let the detergent soak into the stain for a few minutes.

    • 3

Wash the soiled article in the washing machine using hot water.

    • 4

Inspect the stain once the cycle is finished. If the stain is no longer visible, dry the article. If the stain is still visible, continue to reapply detergent and wash the article until the stain is fully removed.
