How to Get Utensil Marks Off of White Dinnerware

Gray utensil marks on dishes occur when bits of metal become deposited on the plates through regular use or during dish washing. Utensil marks make the dishes look dirty and old, but are usually simple to remove, depending on the finish. Start with a mild cleaning product first, followed by more substantial methods if the stains do not come off. Do not use bleach or vinegar, which may cause yellowing. Make sure flatware doesn't touch the dishes in the dishwasher, which can cause utensil marks.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix baking soda and water together to form a thick paste. Baking soda has a very mild abrasive quality that is safe for most white dinnerware.

    • 2

Rub the paste in a circular motion on the dinnerware with a soft cloth to remove the utensil marks. Rinse the plates with warm water to remove the paste. Dry with a clean cloth.

    • 3

Rub the plates with silver polish or a commercial dish cleaner if the stains remain, according to package directions. Rinse and dry.
