Removing an Oil Stain From Silk Velvet

Silk velvet offers a double delight to the wearer. It feels wonderful against the skin and has a handsome texture best suited to cocktail and evening suiting, frocks and ball gowns. Wearing the fine fabric can prove so heady that one may forget how delicate it is -- and how vigilant one must be about care. Discovering a stain on silk velvet is disheartening, as stains destroy the illusion of elegance and luxury inspired by the fabric. An oil stain can be a particular challenge, as water alone will not remove it.

Instructions

    • 1

Dab as small an amount of the shampoo as possible onto the oil stain. Work a small area when working with stained delicate fabric. Use the smallest possible amount of cleaning agent, so that you do not inadvertently spread the stain to the surrounding fabric.

    • 2

Work the shampoo into the oil stain so that the shampoo penetrates the fibers. Penetration will allow for thorough stain removal. Work from the outside of the stain toward the center to help keep the stain from spreading.

    • 3

Rinse away the stain, either by dabbing water onto it with a clean cloth or dipping the stained spot into a container of cool water. Use just enough water to remove the shampoo -- and the stain. Contain the migration of water to the surrounding fabric.

    • 4

Dab the moistened area with a dry cloth. If possible, place the stained spot between two dry cloths and press gently to absorb water from the stained area. Remove the cloth and allow the spot to air-dry completely.
