Instructions

    • 1

Set the cast iron cookware into the sink and run hot water into it. Soak cast iron utensils in enough hot water to submerge them. Allow the cast iron to soak for an hour adding more hot water every 15 minutes as it cools.

    • 2

Drain away the water and sprinkle baking soda over the cast iron.

    • 3

Scrub the cast iron with a plastic scouring pad to eliminate as much of the burnt grease as possible. The baking soda will act as a mild abrasive to aid in removing the grease.

    • 4

Rinse the cast iron with hot water and inspect it to see how much of the grease has been removed.

    • 5

Wipe the cast iron dry with a soft dry towel.

    • 6

Spray the greasy surface with oven cleaner if the stubborn stain remains.

    • 7

Place the cast iron item into a plastic bag and tie it closed.

    • 8

Set the bag in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area for 24 to 48 hours.

    • 9

Remove the cast iron from the bag and discard the bag in an outside receptacle.

    • 10

Wash the cast iron with warm soapy water and rinse it well.

    • 11

Dry the cast iron with a soft, dry towel.

    • 12

Reseason the cast iron by wiping it down with shortening and a paper towel and placing it into an oven preheated to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Take the cast iron out of the oven after 15 minutes and pour out any oil that has collected before placing it back into the oven for two hours.
