How to Deodorize & Disinfect Foam Mattress Pads

A dog, a child or a smoky apartment are typical suspects when it comes to a foam mattress pad that needs a deep clean. While less expensive mattress pads may be easier to replace than clean, save some money by trying to deodorize your foam mattress pad at home with common cleaning products. A foam mattress pad soaks up water easily and gets heavy and cumbersome, so plan ahead by having a clean space to stretch it out and perhaps someone to help you maneuver the pad, especially if it is a larger size.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the mattress pad with an upholstery attachment to remove any loose dirt, hair or other materials before cleaning.

    • 2

Put the mattress pad in a bathtub. If you don’t have access to a big enough bathtub, try placing it on a patio table, tarp or other clean surface outside, making sure you can reach it with a hose.

    • 3

Mix liquid detergent with water in a spray bottle. Use approximately 1 part detergent to 2 parts water.

    • 4

Spray the mattress pad on both sides. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

    • 5

Rinse pad thoroughly with clean water. After soaking the pad, press it down to squeeze water out. Do not wring out the pad, as it may tear or become misshapen.

    • 6

Mix 1 part white vinegar with 4 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the mattress pad again.

    • 7

Rinse the mattress pad with clean water. Press the pad all over to eliminate as much water as you can.

    • 8

Let the pad dry. A hair dryer, fan or sunlight can assist in drying. Replace the mattress pad on the bed when it is completely dry.
