Removing Auto Oils From Couches

Auto oil is necessary for the life of your vehicle. However, it can quickly ruin couches if not dealt with in a timely manner. Auto oils leave discolorations on the fabric that last for the life of the couch. The longer the motor oil sits on the sofa, the more difficult removing it becomes. With quick action and proper cleaning, you can remove the oil and restore the look of the sofa.

Instructions

    • 1

Scoop excess auto oil carefully off the upholstery with a spoon or the dull edge of a butter knife.

    • 2

Cover the lingering oil with cornstarch or baking soda. These powders are absorbent products that help pull the remaining oil out of the fabric.

    • 3

Leave the cornstarch or baking soda on the couch for 15 minutes. Remove the powder with a vacuum cleaner upholstery brush.

    • 4

Add dry cleaning solvent to a white cloth until it's well-saturated. Blot the edge of the auto oil stain with the saturated cloth in a vigorous motion while working your way toward the center of the discoloration.

    • 5

Continue adding dry cleaning solvent to the cloth and blotting the oil stain until you remove it from the couch.

    • 6

Rinse the dry cleaning solvent off the upholstery with a clean cloth moistened in cool water. Pat the couch fabric dry with a towel.
