Metal forks, spoons and knives sometimes mar dishes with unattractive gray or black marks that don't wash away easily in the dishwasher or when scrubbed manually. The marks often result when the glaze on plates and bowls begins to disintegrate, leaving the dishes unprotected and easy to damage. This doesn't mean they should be discarded; you can remove the marks using items commonly found in most households. However, it may be necessary to treat your dishes more than once to completely eliminate the marks.
