How to Get Calcium Off of the Top of Fish Tanks

Those unsightly white streaks or spots appearing on the top of your fish tank are caused by calcium deposits, the result of minerals dissolved in the water. This is a common problem in areas where the water supply has a high mineral content (also called hard water). Removing the calcium from the top or other parts of a fish tank isn’t hard. Harsh chemicals, however, may be toxic to your fish. Rather than buying commercial products formulated for fish tanks, you can save money by using a solution of water and white vinegar.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a solution with one-half cup of white vinegar diluted with one-half gallon of water. Fill a spray bottle with the solution.

    • 2

Spray the calcium deposits with your vinegar solution and let it soak for a couple of minutes. Use a paper towel or clean rag to scrub the calcium off the top of the fish tank. Apply undiluted vinegar to spots with more buildup using a paper towel.

Use a plastic scraper or kitchen scrub pad on stubborn spots. Don't use steel wool or you'll scratch the top of the fish tank. Instead, use a scrub pad designed for use on glass and other surfaces.

Wipe away any residue and excess vinegar with a clean paper towel. Test the pH of the water in the fish tank. Vinegar is nontoxic, but it is an acid. The pH test will verify that you haven’t accidentally added enough vinegar to alter the chemical balance in your aquarium.
