How to Get Rid of the Gray Film on Metal Bakeware

Metal bakeware, such as stainless steel, is exposed to a variety of stain-causing materials. Oils from baked goods and food stains that aren't removed during routine cleaning can end up being baked on. Oily residue that's left on your metal bakeware ends up being carbonized as it hardens during repeat baking. The gray film that develops must be removed to maintain peak performance from metal bakeware and prevent the film from affecting your baked goods. You can get rid of the gray film and other baked-on stains with simple home remedies using supplies from around your house.

    • 2

Remove the apple cider vinegar from the microwave. Pour it into the bakeware with the gray film in it.

    • 3

Add 2 tablespoons of white sugar to the apple cider vinegar. Stir the sugar into the warmed vinegar with a wooden spoon until dissolved. Allow the warmed vinegar and sugar mixture to remain in your baking pan until cooled.

Scrub the inside of the baking pan with a nylon mesh sponge, and with the vinegar and sugar mixture to remove the gray film. Rinse the pan with warm water.

Clean the pan with warm water and two or three drops of dishwashing detergent on the nylon mesh sponge. Rinse the pan well to remove soap residue. Dry the pan with a clean, kitchen towel.
