How to Remove Cigarette Burns From a Wood Table

An accidental falling butt or ashtray miss can leave an unsightly scorch mark on your wooden furniture. The cigarette mark detracts from the wooden piece’s natural beauty and doesn’t have to be accepyed or covered with a fabric runner. Use inexpensive materials found at your local hardware store, or under the sink, to remove the cigarette burn from your wooden furniture without causing any further damage or discoloration.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup ammonia
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • Paper towel
  • Soft cloths
  • Furniture polish
  • 1/4 cup rottenstone
  • 3 tablespoons boiled linseed oil

Instructions

  1. Ammonia and Baking Soda

      Create a mixture of 1/4 cup ammonia and 1/2 cup baking soda. Stir the ingredients until they are thoroughly mixed, and add more baking soda if the paste is too runny.

      Apply a thick layer of the ammonia paste to the cigarette burn with a paper towel. Allow the paste to remain and penetrate the scorched mark for at least 10 minutes.

      Wipe away the paste with a damp cloth. Dry the wooden piece with a soft cloth, and restore its appearance by applying furniture polish according to the package directions.

    Rottenstone and Boiled Linseed Oil

      Create a paste by mixing 1/4 cup rottenstone, a mild abrasive available at home improvement and hardware stores, and 3 tablespoons boiled linseed oil. Stir the ingredients, and add more rottenstone if the paste is too runny.

      Work the abrasive paste into the furniture with a soft cloth. Continue to work the paste into the scorch mark until it is completely gone.

      Wipe away the paste with a damp cloth. Dry the wooden piece with a soft cloth, and restore its appearance by applying furniture polish according to the package directions.
