Removing Bluish Stains on Stainless Steel

Otherwise known as corrosion-resistant steel, stainless steel does not form rust as easily as other metals, although it is susceptible to bluing. The bluish stains on your stainless steel item is caused by exposure to heat. Removing the blue stains is possible without harming the stainless steel’s mirror finish.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Soft cloths
  • Club soda or olive oil
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • Baking soda

Instructions

  1. Club Soda or Olive Oil

    • 1

      Create a mixture with 1/4 tablespoon of liquid dish soap and 3 cups of warm water. Stir the water to incorporate the dish soap.

      Dampen a soft cloth with the soapy water, and wipe down the stainless steel surface to remove any dirt, grease or grime.

      Dry the stainless steel with a soft cloth.

      Dampen a separate soft cloth with club soda or olive oil, and work it into the bluish stain using overlapping circles.

      Continue to work the club soda or olive oil into the stainless steel until the bluish residue is completely removed. Apply pressure if necessary to remove any difficult stains.

      Wipe down the stainless steel with a damp cloth to remove any residue, and buff it dry with a separate soft cloth to restore the metal’s shine.

    White Vinegar and Baking Soda

      Create a mixture with 1/4 tablespoon of liquid dish soap and 3 cups of warm water. Stir the water to incorporate the dish soap.

      Dampen a soft cloth with the soapy water, and wipe down the stainless steel surface to remove any dirt, grease or grime.

      Dry the stainless steel with a soft cloth. Create a mixture with 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Stir the ingredients, and add more baking soda until a paste is formed.

      Rub the paste on the bluish stains. Allow the paste to remain for at least 10 minutes before wiping it away with a damp soft cloth.

      Wipe down the stainless steel again with a damp cloth to remove any residue, and buff it dry with a separate soft cloth to restore the metal’s shine.
