How to Bleach White Satin

Removing stains from white satin is easiest when the stains are fresh because most can be blotted or rinsed out with water. However, once a stain has set, bleaching is the best course of action to restore the satin to a pure white. The composition of your satin garment determines whether you bleach the garment at home or pay a professional to do it for you. Satin comes in two blends: silk and polyester. Bleach will destroy silk fibers and whiten polyester fibers.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a sink with cold water.

    • 2

Add the manufacture-recommended amount of gentle detergent and 2 tablespoons of bleach. Stir the water to distribute the detergent and bleach evenly.

    • 3

Place the garment in the water, and agitate gently to thoroughly wet the garment.

    • 4

Allow the garment to soak for five minutes. Do not overbleach the garment. Chlorine bleach has corrosive effects the longer it sits on a fabric.

    • 5

Drain the sink and rinse the garment under cool, running water. Rinse for three to five minutes to remove all bleach thoroughly.

    • 6

Lay the garment flat on a white towel. Roll the towel with the garment inside, and press to remove excess water. Do not wring the garment or it will lose its shape.

    • 7

Unroll the towel and dry the garment flat. Satin appears discolored while wet. Allow it to dry completely before determining if the bleaching process was successful.
