How to Clean Smoke Off Cinder Blocks

Cinder blocks are a type of masonry surface that are also commonly referred to as "concrete blocks." These blocks are made from a combination of coal cinders and cement. If you have a fire that burns near cinder blocks, you may accumulate smoke stains on this surface. Since cinder blocks have a porous surface, you must use a cleaning technique that is thorough enough to clean the pores of the blocks without damaging the integrity of the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the stained area using a water hose. Attach a nozzle that allows you to concentrate the stream of the water and use the maximum pressure of the hose.

    • 2

Pour 1 quart of warm water into a bucket. Add 3 cups of baking soda and several squirts of liquid dish soap. Mix the ingredients to form a slightly soapy thin paste.

    • 3

Apply the paste to the stained areas using a scrub brush that has stiff nylon bristles. Scrub the paste into the stain thoroughly.

    • 4

Rinse using the water hose with attached nozzle. Repeat the scrub and rinse if necessary.

    • 5

Blast the surface with a sand blaster or soda blaster if necessary. This method involves spraying sand or baking soda at a high velocity at the cinder blocks. This is more effective for tough stains that may not come off by hand, but this method also is more likely to damage the surface of the blocks by making them more porous and susceptible to future stains.
